JEANNE ROSIER SMITH grew up in Maryland, studied English and French at Georgetown University, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in English at Tufts. From the age of fourteen, she’s also been an artist, taking painting classes in college and painting whenever she could. After teaching college English for ten years, Jeanne decided to switch to a full-time career in art in 2005. She teaches workshops around the country and internationally and devotes most of her time to painting in pastel. She is best known for her seascapes and coastal landscapes.
She says her most recent work is “a culmination of my decade-long obsession with water. Like swimming, painting is a full-immersion experience. With this new series, I’m diving deeper, bringing the ocean closer. I want to taste the salt in the air, hear the waves, feel the wind and dive right in. My process begins by closed-cropping my reference images until they’re blurry. I rely on memory and knowledge of body surfing as much as on my photos. My painting process begins with wet alcohol washes of dry pastels, then a gradual building of layers of dry pastel on top, some thick juicy swipes, some light, airy glazes, and some liquid splatters of dissolved pastel.”
Jeanne’s work is currently part of a six-museum National Exhibition Tour with the American Society of Marine Artists, through October 2021. In Sept 2019 Jeanne was Cape Ann Museum Fellow and Resident Artist, living and painting on the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts, an experience that had a profound impact on her recent work. She has worked closely with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for two recent pastel exhibitions, serving as educational consultant for their popular 19th Century French Pastels exhibit, and presenting gallery talks and painting demonstrations. Jeanne has won numerous top awards, including first place in Pastel Journal magazine’s 2019 Top 100 landscape competition, an honor she also took in 2017. She is a Master Artist with the Copley Society, a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the American Society of Marine Artists, an IAPS Master’s Circle Member, and a member of New York’s Salmagundi Club. Jeanne has exhibited work in museums nationwide and her work is in collections on six continents.
Jeanne was featured in the August 2018 Pastel Journal, for which she has also been a regular contributor. Jeanne offers workshops in her Sudbury MA pastel studio, across the US and in Europe. Upcoming 2020-2021 Workshops are scheduled for Texas, NYC, Massachusetts, Ontario CA, New Jersey, Southern California, and Portugal.
